The Big Chris Barber Band Review

The Big Chris Barber Band - with a special guest appearance of Andy Fairweather-Low “As We Like It” Classic Studio T ref DVD50646X

This is a fabulously filmed and recorded twenty-one track live concert by the very fine Big Chris Barber band with a guest appearance by the excellent musician and blues singer Andy Fairweather-Low. Recorded in front of an invited audience at the Classic Stag T of Shepperton Film Studios the concert is very much like recent public concerts by the band in which they run through their very varied repertoire of Ellingtonia and a host of other material interpreted in unique Barber-style. This ranges from compositions by Miles Davis, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee and the Dorsey Brothers and was described by Blues Matters magazine as “a terrific performance”. They are right, because with the show ranging seamlessly from exciting big band work outs on numbers like Bourbon Street Parade to more traditional styled tunes played by the New Orleans style six-piece Barber Band, the interest never falters. The band is on top form, packed with brilliant soloists and in ensemble form when playing arrangements by the brilliant Bob Hunt must be one of the finest bands we have ever had pleasure of hearing. And - having recently attended a live concert by the band - I can assure you that in this recording nothing is lost. If anything viewing it is almost better than being at a concert because there are no distractions. I am so pleased that Chris has made this film - I’ve been enjoying his music now for almost as long as he’s been making it and have many Cds of his bands. But until now something was missing - this DVD fills the gap. Thanks Chris - this is just what we needed
