Lost & Found Review

Chris Barber Presents - Lost & Found Vol. 1 Sister Rosetta Tharpe with the Chris Barber Band - and - Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee Classic Studio T - ref 5067X

When Chris Barber not so long ago discovered a treasure trove of 1/4 inch magnetic tapes he had no idea that he was unlocking a horde of great music. On investigation the tapes proved to contain recordings of American blues artists that Chris’ had brought to Europe to appear both solo and with his band. Included were greats like Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, Howlin’ Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson, Champion Jack Dupree and many more. This CD is the beginning of the
“mining” of those tapes - and - considering that the skiffle and then European rhythm and blues era was borne out of Chris’ band, Lonnie Donegan and then these “imports” it’s not difficult to understand their significance. On this CD for example we have classic Sister Rosetta Tharpe in full gospel spate and then the urban blues of Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee both solo and with Chris’ wonderful band. These are not just highly entertaining tracks - they’re historically very significant. Add them to your collection and then look out for others in the series.
